Yankton is best known for the 30-mile Lewis and Clark Lake and wild and scenic Missouri National Recreational River. But there's more to be discovered.
From its days as the capital of the Dakota Territory to tales of the Old West Yankton's interesting and abundant history is sprinkled through out the community. History buffs can take a trip back in time by touring one of Yankton's historic sites or homes or by exploring the Dakota Territorial Museum.

Archers may take advantage of a 28-target NFAA (National Field Archery Association) certified archery range, as well as a practice range. The archery range is set up into two 14-target rounds and is laid out in a wooded section of the park, giving archers a natural setting to enjoy their sport. Scorecards, provided by Dakota Archery & Outdoor Sports, are available at the range. The range hosts regional archery tournaments and was the site for the Annual NFAA Outdoor Field Archery and 3-D Championship Tournaments in 2005 and 2006. A park license is required to use the range; $5/day or $23 for an annual permit. Open to the public from April 15 through Sept. 30, unless a special event is being held.
Disc Golf
Fun for everyone! A 9-hole course is located at the Gavins Point Day Use Area. Frisbees are available for checkout at the park office, park entrance fee required and scorecards are at the first tee. Call the Lewis & Clark park office at (605) 668-2985 for more information. A 9-hole course is also located at Fantle Memorial Park in Yankton. A visit to Garritys’ Prairie Gardens is fun for the entire family. Fresh-picked strawberries, raspberries, apples, fresh vegetables and pumpkins are available throughout the season. Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery & Aquarium

Fish, fish, everywhere! Built in 1960 on the Missouri River, the hatchery has produced over 5 billion fish for release in Midwestern waters. In the cool, dimly lit surrounds of the aquarium, visitors become part of the aquatic environment as fish and turtles slowly swim within 13 tanks. Exhibits, displays and aquatic animals located in the aquarium building explain the work and objectives of the hatchery. The hatchery is one of 65 national Federal Hatcheries and Fish Technology Centers operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Open April 1 through Oct. 31 daily from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Kayaking and Canoeing
Lewis & Clark Lake and the Missouri National Recreational River provide miles of water and shoreline to explore by kayak or canoe! The beautiful chalkstone bluffs of Lewis & Clark Lake provide a scenic backdrop for people who like to travel across deep and wide waters, see beautiful natural history, scenery and view wildlife. The "rec river" is a unit of the National Park System and part of the nation's Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Guided excursions are available through Missouri River Expeditions, 1-866-USKAYAK. Boating, camping, fishing, jet skiing, kayaking, sailing, swimming, tubing and water skiing are just some of the activities you can enjoy! The Lewis & Clark Resort and Captain’s Galley & Beach Bum Bar restaurant are located in the recreation area. Bede Art Gallery provides a cultural center where professional artists showcase their work. The gallery, located in the Roncalli Center on Mount Marty College campus, is named after and in remembrance of Bede the Venerable. Monthly exhibits from regional artists are featured throughout the school year, many with an artist’s Gallery Talk and reception. A student exhibit highlights the end of each semester. A distinctive Yankton landmark built in 1954, Bishop Marty Chapel is considered one of the country’s best examples of western architecture. Saints depicted over the portal of the front door include Saints Gertrude the Great, Lioba, Scholastica, Benedict, Gregory, Anslem and Bede. At the back of the Upper Chapel is a plaque on the east wall that commemorates the loving memory of the deceased Sisters of the Benedictine Convent of Sacred Heart Monastery.

Cramer Kenyon Heritage Home & Dorothy Jencks Memorial Garden

Built in 1882 by the Secretary of Dakota Territory, this stately home is the tallest Queen Anne home in South Dakota. Unique features of the home include heavy double doors in the front entry, high covered ceilings, combination gas and electric chandeliers and original imported wallpaper in the parlors. The home remains in its original 1880s decor with oil paintings by Alice Bullfinch Cramer decorating the walls. Open for guided tours from Memorial Day through Labor Day, Wednesday – Sunday from 1 – 5 p.m. During the off season, the home is open by appointment. Admission is $4 for adults and $1 for students.
Dakota Spirit

Keep Yankton Beautiful presented this fountain to the City of Yankton in 2006. The fountain reconnects Yankton with its past of being called “The Fountain City”. This fountain fittingly called “Dakota Spirit” was sculpted out of one solid 18 ton block of South Dakota granite from Milbank. The fountain appears to be made of many layers. These layers represent all the different people that make up South Dakota past and present.

The capitol is a symbol of Yankton as the first capitol of Dakota Territory from 1861-1883. The replica is patterned after the original Dakota Territorial Capitol built in Yankton in 1862 and torn down in 1886. Displays in the building include photographs of old Yankton, maps of the Dakota Territory, a gallery of former Dakota Territorial governors and a tribute to the local St. John's Masonic Lodge. Visitors will want to view the quilt highlighting Yankton landmarks, made by the four Yankton Quester chapters. Take a step back in time as you enter the Dakota Territorial Museum. The museum holds a large collection of rare memorabilia of early life in the Dakota Territory. Some of the exhibits include the musical instruments of Felix Vinatieri, who played in General George Custer’s band, a large collection of fishing equipment, railroad depot, caboose and one-room country school. Open May 1 through Sept. 30, Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday from 12 – 4 p.m. Open Oct. 1 through April 30, Monday – Sunday from Noon – 4 p.m. and by appointment year-round. This finely preserved Civil War building is the home of Yankton Area Arts and provides a charming setting for monthly art exhibits, receptions and meetings. There is a fully-equipped kitchen and large classroom in the basement. Historically, the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) built the hall in 1887 as the Phil Kearney Post No. 7, a meeting place for Union veterans and their auxiliary. Take a tour of the past! Incorporated in 1862, Yankton is a riverboat city rich with history and charm. Many of the original homes date back to the 1870s and are a wonderful collection of the architecture of that time. House of Mary Shrine

On a hill crest overlooking Lewis & Clark Lake, three giant crosses stand as a reminder of the life and death of Jesus Christ. Down the slope a bell tower, statues, shrinettes, the Way of the Cross, the Living Waters, the Rosary Way and St. Joseph’s Chapel are tucked among the trees. The House of Mary Shrine began when a young Catholic couple bought a piece of property bordering the park on the lake in 1957. Marian Visitor’s Center, with its gift shop and museum, is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, Saturday – Sunday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Jack McCall Historical Marker
Intersection of Highway 81 & Highway 50
Being the first territorial capital of the Dakotas, Yankton hosted the trail and hanging of the notorious Jack McCall for the murder of Wild Bill Hickok. The trail began on Dec. 4, 1876 in a courtroom at what is now Third Street and Capitol Street. Two days later the jury found McCall guilty. McCall’s hanging took place on March 1,1877 at the present day intersection of Highway 81 and Highway 50. The site of the hanging is marked by a historical plaque, which is located in the parking lot on the south end of the Human Services Center.
Meridian Bridge

The Meridian Bridge, a long-time landmark in Yankton, is the result of hard work and determination of local citizens. Built in 1924, it was the first permanent bridge crossing the Missouri River. This unique bridge is a “double-decker” with one lane positioned above another. It was constructed as a lift-span bridge to allow riverboat traffic to traverse the river. Up until 1953, it was operated as a toll bridge. Take a look at this beauty!

Mount Marty College is a beautifully maintained 80-acre campus along the bluffs of the Missouri River. The college offers Bachelor degrees, Associate degrees, pre-professional studies and Masters Programs. Students at Mount Marty are surrounded by excellent academics, strong values and many ways to stay involved. Attractive financial aid packages and scholarships make a Mount Marty education a tremendous value. Founded in 1936 by the Sisters of Saint Benedict, the college is named in memory of Martin Marty, a Benedictine missionary and the area’s first Catholic Bishop.
Pierre Dorian’s Grave

Pierre Dorian was the first white settler in the Yankton area. He lived among the Yankton Sioux at the time that Lewis & Clark passed through in 1804. Lewis & Clark convinced Dorian to accompany them on their expedition and to serve as an Indian interpreter. Dorian later returned to the Yankton area. His grave was located by a local historian and a memorial marker dedicated in 2002.
USS Scorpion Historical Marker

Presented by U.S. Submarine Veterans WWII South Dakota Chapter, this historical marker is located near the Missouri River on the West side of the Meridian Bridge. Scorpion was launched on July 20, 1942 and their first patrol was a hunting and mining mission near Honshu in April 1943. Scorpion went on three patrols that earned her a battle star. She was involved with a series of torpedo attacks and gun battles. On Jan. 5, 1944, Scorpion rendezvoused with Herring to transfer an injured man, but heavy seas prevented a safe transfer. Scorpion and 77 courageous crewmen were never seen again.

The Meridian Trails system offers you over 30 miles of trails filled with scenic beauty and several historic sites. Travel along the trails throughout the city of Yankton and Lewis & Clark Lake area! The Riverside Park Amphitheater is available for events throughout the year. Concerts in the Park are held every Tuesday at 8 p.m. during June, July and August. Each week a different band performs an outdoor concert. Bands come from outside Yankton, as well as local groups. No admission.
