Community Vision:

In addition to the normal planning and vision the City is undergoing an exciting transformation of the downtown. The current construction of a new bridge over the Missouri River and the conversion of the old Meridian Bridge to a pedestrian crossing presents an exciting opportunity for Yankton. This link includes a visual representation of some of the ideas that have been discussed to date regarding the conversion of the Meridian Bridge.

Downtown Concept Plan

Yankton Comprehensive Plan

The Yankton PlanThe City of Yankton Comprehensive Development Plan has two fundamental purposes. The first is that it provides an essential legal basis for land use regulation such as zoning and subdivision control. Secondly, a modern comprehensive plan presents a unified and compelling vision for the community, derived from the aspirations of its citizens. The Plan establishes the specific actions needed to fulfill that vision.

The ideas and goals included in the plan are developed by the community through the planning process. The process is extremely important because the plan serves as a guide for Commissioners and administrators in the daily decision making process of running the city. The plan is designed to look 20 years into the future of the community. However, timely updates that recognize changes in the community are a necessary part of the responsible implementation of the document.

The Yankton Comprehensive Planning process began in 2002. A citizen committee (see attached member list) has provided city staff and a planning consultant with the input necessary to develop the attached draft of the plan. The draft will continue through the formal adoption process as defined by South Dakota Codified Law during the next few months. A copy of the plan is available for review on-line at www.cityofyankton.org, the Yankton Public Library and at the Community Development Office in City Hall.

The Yankton Plan was officially adopted by the City Commission on September 22, 2003.
